Charging Extra For Tethering… Not Fair I Say!

Tethering: the act of using a mobile phones internet connection to provide internet connectivity to a non-phone device. Tethering is a great way to get access to the internet on the go, when your mobile phone just can’t cut it. There are many useful features for this; for starters, you might need to use a program that’s not available on your phone, or you just might prefer a bigger screen for your current task. Whatever the reason, tethering is an awesome technology that unfortunately most mobile carriers decided to charge us all extra to use.

Why should a customer have to pay more per month just to use something which at its core is just bits? Ones and zeroes; representing the data that is then interpreted by your program to make sense of it all. So why should our carriers be allowed to discriminate what devices can use that data and which ones can’t?

A customer should be able to use their data in whatever way they want (as long as it’s legal content.) So if you’re paying for a one gigabyte plan, why should you not be able to use that one gigabyte in whatever way you see fit?
That has always been something that I view as being unfair to the customer, as it’s essentially ripping the customer off. The phone carrier has no additional costs associated with them in provide tethering, as it’s built into your phone, and just passes the data from your phone to the device connected to it. Therefore, how can they justify charging the customer extra for that; oh right ‘cause they want to rip you off as much as they can (Well it just seems that way anyways…)

In conclusion, I hope that these carriers realize that it is an unfair thing to do, and to eliminate the practice of charging more for a feature on a phone that has nothing to do with the service itself. And while they are at it, show some more love and care for their customers and give them more perks for being a loyal paying customer. That is all.
