Today’s topic is going to be all about Virtual Reality. I was surfing the web when I came across a video that showcased a room that was almost completely immersed in video projections making the room appear to be very dynamic in nature. This room has many projectors all scattered around the room’s space and several cameras as well. In order to make all this work practically, the projection would have to shift the point of view that was being projected to where it would match where the camera was to make it look like a 3D image, instead of a 2D one. To the actors, the room probably looked very weird, as the world was shifting and moving all around, but to the video camera it remained relatively stable.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if someday a set of technologies were put together to coordinate something like that which we saw in this video; but instead be used for a video game application. Of course it wouldn’t be complete without actual 3D projections, so all those in the room could enjoy this virtual world and not just a single player. To the readers: how long do you all think it will take for something like this to become a reality or should I say virtual reality? Ok ok, lame pun, but still, this is an exciting potential advancement for many. I know I for one would love to play a video game that requires me to move my body much more then what the Wii, or Kinect can offer. But alas we have to wait for technology to catch up to our ideas and wonder. Heck, instead of me sitting here writing about the potentials of future technology, perhaps I myself should consume my time in a career researching these kinds of things, so that I may be able to contribute something of worth to the society.
Well would it really be a contribution to society if all anyone used it for was to zone out to a video game and waste time? That brings me onto the next possibility of applications for these types of things. Military applications probably being the highest bidder. The military would probably be foaming at the mouth over the possibility of training their next generation of soldiers in these types of devices as they could conjure up any number of environments at the click of a button, or maybe even a simple thought of the mind.
As with most ideas brought up in science fiction it is only a matter of time before the creativity of the human race comes up with a practical solution to these life changing technology advancements. Now here’s the real question, do we really need all this junk? Meh, why not is the way I look at it, as long as we still have freedom and no one is being harmed directly by these advancements then bring on the future!
